Hello! I am an Associate Professor of International Relations with the University of Maryland's School of Public Policy. My research focuses on international relations theory & international security, great power politics, U.S. foreign policy/grand strategy, and diplomatic history. I also have a deep commitment to connecting historical research with IR theory, particularly through the conduct of archival research (as the picture at left implies!). Click through the links at top for summaries of my major projects and copies of principal publications.
I received my Ph.D in Political Science from MIT. Prior to UIMD, I was an Associate Professor with Boston University's Pardee School of Global Studies, and an Assistant Professor with the Bush School at Texas A&M.
Cornell University Press published my first book, Rising Titans, Falling Giants: How Great Powers Exploit Power Shifts, in 2018. Additional research is in or forthcoming with International Security, Perspectives on Politics, International Politics, the Journal of Strategic Studies, The Washington Quarterly, and other venues.
